How to read an INCI list
The INCI list is the same on every label in the world. Learn the three rules and you can read any product — or let the scanner do it for you.
1. Order means concentration
Ingredients are listed from most to least. The first three to five define what a product really is; a headline active sitting near the end is barely present.
2. The 1% line
Below roughly 1%, brands may list ingredients in any order. Preservatives, fragrance and colourants usually mark where that line starts.
3. Names are standardised
Aqua is water, Parfum/Fragrance is added scent, Alcohol Denat. is a drying alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol a harmless fatty one. Same word, every country.

Alcohol Denat.

Added scent — the most common trigger for reactive skin.
Retinol
A vitamin-A active for texture and fine lines; don't pair with strong acids.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate
A foaming cleanser (SLES) that can feel stripping on dry skin.
Dimethicone
A silicone that smooths and protects — flagged only if you avoid silicones.
Cocos Nucifera Oil
Coconut oil: nourishing, but highly comedogenic on acne-prone skin.
